And a "googan" is???????
it is a loosely used term to identify a person that does not appear to know what they are doing,,alot of time it is used by resident googans that think because they live in the area they know more than others.

Steve is right, a pier regular can be a "googan", and I am living, breathing proof!

Re: Super googans
Gonna be there with the wife next week. It is first trip to the pier and the pirates upon it. Guess I better bring my googan sign. Missed about 3 pound bass here this morning so I already have googan tendencies.

Re: Super googans
The one thing that really sets a googan apart from an inexperienced fisherman is his inability/unwillingness to ask for or accept help from folks that DO know what they are doing. They assume they know considerably more than they do and are prone to take offense when their shortcomings are pointed out.
BTW, Fin is poormouthing. He is far from a googan. He likes to pretend to be one so he can get pretty girls in bikinis to pose for him.oke1:
Screw it. Let's ride.

Re: Super googans
A problem with the term 'googan' is that it is used both for inexperienced fishermen AND/OR difficult people. In my experience, the two don't necessarily have any connection. I've encountered annoying pier regulars, tourists, kids and elderly with varying skill levels. When the term gets thrown around on the forum it often gets turned into a pier regular vs. tourist argument, when instead it should be about being respectful vs. rude. If the people around me are trying their best to be courteous, I couldn't care less if they are fishing for the first time. They have every right to fish on the octi. Even if they are holding their spinning reel upside down.

Yeah, I've heard how lately the "pirate clique" has really been running people off. ;-) LOL
Couldn't agree more with your assessment.
Give me a 'newbie' anyday who wants to ask questions and see how it's being done
over some loud-mouthed 'know it all'.
I don't care where anybody lives or comes from, it's how they act and treat other people that matters!(RETIRED) mostly.

Re: Super googans
I think yellerhammer5 and divedeep have a real good handle on googanism. I think it is those who are unwilling to learn and I am fully aware that I am capable of incidents of incandescent stupidity which qualify me for the googan club, but I try not to live the life full time.
There was a young man from Dallas on the pier this evening who hooked a big red and obviously was at a loss as to what to do, but he had the good sense to say so and I helped him adjust his drag and a couple of other folks helped him follow his fish. When the fish was netted he was grinning so wide I was afraid the top of his head would fall off. I don't consider somebody like that a googan.

Re: Super googans
Anybody can be a googan, I know I must qualify on some occasions, some times you just can't do nothing right. I've discovered though it makes a huge difference in wanting to get along with people and just having the right attitude. Its all about having fun with friends and family, and that's what pier fishing is to me.

the peeps that came up with the word googan have bad attitudes and don't want to get along with others,, i would say they would dissagree with softening the meaning of the word..

The Urban Dictionary defines a Googan as a: lowlife shore fisherman who baitfish typically without a license, regard for regulations, and etiquette towards other people, especially other fisherman following the rules.

Come November, there's some really fun and productive fishing in store for the pier fisherman. One of my favorites is the whiting a hard-pulling, great eating fish and when the schools are in, you...
