Life is good! New jobs are treating us right. Stacy takes her hunter safety class tomorrow morning so we can chase thunderchickens next weekend. We can't wait to fish with you guys again-it's been too long.
I've exhausted all of my vacuum packed king and Spanish so it's time to do a long weekend on the yak and fill the freezer back up if the wind and waves cooperate. I'll bring what gear I need to once I confirm that I'm not going to have any issues with leaving the hospital for a few days. I'm more than willing to help out with longer drops in my kayak and tail roping when you get one to the sand. I will shoot you my new telephone number tomorrow so we can coordinate closer to go-time.
Thinks are heating up on the water. Should be able to get some bait for the sharking adventure. I'm going to try to catch some rays this weekend.
For the guys coming in from out of town, what motel would you suggest we stay at???
Wish y'all the best all ways wanted to try it but unfortunately wife n family won't b coming down til June 22 so please post many pics thanks
I got a great cabin at the state park allot cheaper than a motel and allot more space.
Moving down to foley late may and would love to get a feel some shore sharking!
Bwhill, Where are you moving from.
Fresh is better, but it is better to have a good choice of frozen ready to go.
3 Sheepshead carcasses (These may get dumped after watching sharks completely ignore fresh carcasses at the pier.)
1 King head
8 whole foot long Spanish
2 whole 2# Bluefish
2 whole 1.5' Ladyfish
2 Cownose ray wings
3 bags of Spanish belly strips for bait fishing

My family and I moved down from Northern Illinois last June. Your going to love the winters.
Northern il. Where are you from john?
I'm in the Chicago suburbs too... curious minds want to know!
We grew up in McHenry. I lived 10 minutes from Wisconsin.
Going to the beach fishin Sunday. Will be testing our shark gear out to see what we need to work on.
Good luck John, post what you catch. The best we could manage last week was a little Sharpnose. Werent trying too seriously though, never fished into the night.
I will let everyone know how we do. We will probably fish from noon till about an hour after dark. I'll need a weekend to fish late nights. Do have to work to pay for the gear.
Some friends and I were sharking Sat evening/night just West of Navarre Pier, we managed to catch, tag & release a 7.5' Scalloped Hammer.
Shark: Scalloped Hammerhead, male, TL-7.5'
Rod: Penn International V, turbo guides.
Reel: Penn 12/0 spooled with 1000 yards of 100# Sufix Superior mono.
Bait: Blackfin Tuna head, dropped about 400 yards out.
Fight lasted about a half hour, fish was tagged for NOAA's Apex Predator Program and released, it swam off very strongly.
My sharking buddy Daron and his wife were down from Kentucky and we met up at their Townhouse for some fishing/sharking.
Daron comes down at least twice a year and been overdue for a good shark, so when I got a fast & very strong run on my rod I told him to harness up.
He fought it for about a half an hour, it really put up some hard fights coming over the bar twice, his wife had to hold onto once as he almost slipped.
A nice medium sized shark for him, his new PB, happy to have given it to him as he deserves it for all he does for others.
Awesome catch!
Hey Guys, Coming down next week for 6 days and would like to do a little sharking. Use to fish out on the east coast with a yak for running baits. Got a couple spinning reels with 500+ yds of 40lb braid with 10' penn prevails. Where exactly can you catch sharks legally? Is perdido pass off the alabama side ok? Fairhope pier? I know about ft morgan, just don't know if we could make it down there with an offroad wheelchair. Just wanting to catch a couple regulation/eating size sharks
You can legally fish for sharks anywhere but the Gulf State Park, as long as you do not create an unsafe condition for anyone in the water or on the beach.
And there is no chumming/ bloodbaiting within 300 feet of the beach.
Your situation poses unique problems with accessability, can you get through sand at all?
If not, I would recommend going all the way to Navarre pier in Florida to fish sharks. But would encourage you to give up on landing sharks and just fish the Gulf State Pier.
You are very likely to hook one there, just can't land it.
Thanks Chile. I can do sand, it's just a pain on bearings. I knew about the chumming and such, just wasn't sure on the regs for orange beach and other areas. We will be fishing the pier also. Definitely caught plenty of sharks king fishing last time we were down there fishing off the pier. Thanks again for the help
It is a very long walk to the Fort Morgan point. I was exhausted after just a few trips pulling my fishing cart, and I'd like to think I am in decent shape.
you could easily catch sharpnose Sharks from the beach on any of the public beach accesses. A lot of them put you on the beach without too much distance to cover. You just need to wade into the first bar and cast out. Not sure about bigger ones.
How do you like the penn prevail? I have a 10ft and 12ft I recently bought. The 10ft is very sensitive, even pompano were putting a good bend on it.
Yeah, the point would definitely be a challenge. I still have most of my sharking equipment, we just always focused on kings down there when we came. I'll give it a shot when we come down. I'm not a huge fan of the prevails for smaller fish. I use mine primarily for channel catfishing up here in Kentucky and they are a little stiff for me. They seem to be a better build quality then the emcasts though. I've seen reel seats break and the tops snap 3-4 eyes down on several emcasts. Now as a big fish rod, the prevails shine. Mine will cast 5-6oz weights + bait all day.
Yeah I had no issues casting big baits along with 3oz spiders. Good luck if you go.
OK... Who all is still down for this?

I will be staying two nights in Foley, June 4th & 5th.
I will be able to fish Thur, Fri and Sat.
Contact via Pm for Ph#.
I hope y'all come out and catch big sharks.
Look forward to meeting everyone.
The best time to do this is early evening when the beach starts to clear off, get out there and run baits at least an hour or two before dark.
Hopefully I am off one of those days Chile.
If anyone who wants to do this will spend $20. on a 3 Day FL non-resident SW license, we can fish just over the state line with no worries of any harassment.
Except maybe by a tree hugging, bunny loving, granola crunching, PETA card carrying Liberal.
Unfortunately I won't be down until July, otherwise I'd be all for it.
guys sorry I have been absent here. I'll be down this coming weekend till the following so I'll beable to get over there for one or two nights.
Chilie,
We are coming down Monday returning Friday, put down 4 for Thursday night.
OK, this is happening. :D
I will have three sharking rigs, tackle, baits and a yak.
I will also have all the gear necessary to land, collect data, tag and release any sharks.
The one thing I need is other people to safely and quickly accomplish these task for the healthy release of the shark.
At least one other person willing to yak baits out in daylight would be nice, at night even nicer.
If we catch a 54" or better Blacktip or Spinner and you wish to harvest it, I have no problem with it.
Any legally retainable species that for some reason dies will be harvested.
Any other sharks over 4' will be tagged for science.
I highly recommend you bring the following if you're going to be a part of the sharking team
Close fitting gloves, I like the Mechanix type
A bright headlight & extra batteries
Flashlight & extra batteries
Balls and the willingness to get personal with a pissed off shark
Brains and common sense to safely do the above
Other items to bring which can make your stay on the beach much nicer.
Fishing gear
Bait cooler
Cooler with drinks/snacks
Extra clothes as it cools off, wind chill
Long pants/sleeves against bugs
Change of underwear/socks
Bug spray & baby powder
Towel and/or blanket
Comfy beach chair
Glow sticks
Good headlight & flashlight
Camera
Some people, especially those with kids, bring a small tent or ground blind.
Flashlights & a bucket can keep kids occupied for a long time chasing crabs & shells
The most important thing to bring is a smile and happiness for just being on the beach with your toes in the sand.
Chilli,
i was able to secure another sharking rig. A 6' -80lb stand up and penn 6/0 so we'll have 4 rigs if we want. I'll also have time terminal tackle as well.
I'm excited and I'm not even able to go. Good luck. I recommend posting live updates!
I'm thinking the second beach access after crossing Perdido Pass going East.
Very easy access.
Should start clearing out about 5pm, we can get in, set up and run baits before sunset.
Or we can all buy FL nonresident 3 day licenses and fish in Florida. No risk of being ran off over there if someone complains.
Yes it is AL.
Chile, I would say fish FL. There is a good access point right next to the first condos on the right after you go through the small state park area there in Perdido key. The have restrooms and a shower. Short walk to the beach as well. If I am able to make it one of those nights, I have a small and a large sharking rig to use as well as my kayak if we need a second one. Get my work schedule in the next couple of days and will know for sure.
Jhatch, restrooms & a shower are really nice amenities to have available.
Beats a bucket & bag.
