The "somehow" is the Magnuson-Stevens Act, which some congresscritters are trying to amend. Regardless of amendments or not what we are going to get is more regulations and inspections to try to get a more accurate count of the catch. The inaccuracy of the current catch statistics is at the heart of the suit the commercials launched. Underneath that, IMO, is that the NMFS would love to grow their little empire - which they can do if they make everybody unhappy enough so that more regulation and enforcement by them is demanded.

There are some people in our government who just want to do a difficult but necessary job and there are some who just like the power and the status that goes with their position. No matter what is finally done with the law we will get a bigger bureaucracy and more people from the government to "help" us.

Since real science seems to be a fleeting mirage for the NMFS, why can't our elected "Ofishalls" get off their asses and get this straightened out before the Gulf is turned into a federal gubmint built "red snapper mono culture" and our charter fishery has gone broke?

So nice to see all the financial resources spent on an elaborate artificial reef program go to benefit commercial interests. REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE-HE WHO HAS THE GOLD MAKES THE RULE.

That's nuts, we couldn't keep the snapper off our hooks last year long enough to catch something we could keep. I hope this is not true.

it really pisses me off i just dont get why in the hell they would decrease it have the people who are making the laws for redsnapper even caught redsnapper in their life? If only we could have real fisherman as the people makin the rules on species of fish. heck when i go out to catch gag grouper and triggerfish we couldnt catch anything but snapper. and that was the past 5 times ive been out.

ALL recreational anglers (nationwide) need to get on their congresspeople's azzes to implement Dr Bob Shipp's proposed 20 fathom red snapper solution...

We need to realize that the political element inside the beltway is not supportive of recreational fishing. Many of them only see recreational fishing a sport of a few or privileged, cruelty to animals or at least an unequal distribution of wealth that needs to be corrected. On top of that, most people in America DON"T fish and don't care.
I know this sounds crazy, but it's true. The NMFS and NOAA ares not run by people who love to fish. IMHO the long range future of recreational fishing is in jeopardy.

Global warming no gill nets just to the East. Three pole limit at Weiss. What next we Fisher people should ban together.

11 days ya its gonna be that little piece of straw the snaps that camels back. They have been going shorter every year with no repercussions, 11 days and you have just removed income from a bunch of peoples pockets . Its time to stand up and fight back , I dont know how but its time to get organized. As another poster said what species is next?

Obvious minor flaws with Dr. Shipp's proposal are that it is logical, reasonable, and workable, but the REALLY big problem is that it does nothing to expand the power of the bureaucrats nor would it allow the watermelons* to mind our business.

I'll do my part to write our congressmen, but I doubt it has a snowball's chance of being adopted.

*watermelon = green on the outside, red on the inside
