Where does the NMFS actually get their data? This just blows my mind, it won't be long before they'll be forcing their hand on another species...

The first link is to a page with all the assessments, the second is to the most recent.

As far as Alabama is concerned the assessment is crap. What is also crap is the classification of snapper as a "highly migratory species", which is what brings them under Magnuson-Stevens. NMFS contended a few years ago that if we were allowed to catch more fish in Alabama because of our abundance then Florida fish would migrate this way.

That's the kind of stuff you find coming out of the south end of a northbound bull.

They aren't the enemy. Sure they may have sold out, but the federal government is holding their livelihood hostage. Our government is very good at dividing us and disguising the fact that they are the enemy.

I'll also be stocking up on fire extinguishers for my beat up old boat. It is still legal to "filet and release" as long as you eat them at sea.

But they and their lawyers decided to couch the case in terms of punishment for recreational fishermen.

a lot of people come down here just to go snapper fishing. i wonder how bad it will hurt the charter boat industries and there deckhands this year

That's true, but if recreational anglers were unified enough to cease all commercial fishing we would do the same. It is about NMFS controlling our waters and it is a lot easier and more cost effective to manage a commercial fleet than a recreational fleet.

Back to your thought on not buying fish from folks on your list. If you want your boycott to affect any change, you should boycott any and all fish. It would also help if you could convince the nonfishing public to join you.

I would not put them out of business or help any man who would, speak for yourself.

I am not trying to organize a boycott, just stating my preference, but I do resent being cast in the role of bad guy when I go fishing as allowed by law and regulation.

The commercials need to remember what the Japanese Admiral said about waking a sleeping giant at Pearl Harbor.

Look what the Feds are doing on the N.C. Outerbanks Hatteras Island especially. Along with the enviromental wackos ,corrupt judge, they have just about shutdown beach access for 4x4s. Prime fishing at the point was closed down because of possible bird breeding activity. 2014 and 2016 elections gonna be important for the outdoorsman.
