Whats the preference on leader for spanish what kind ? and what length ?
25-60# mono or FC, as light as you can get away with without getting cut off constantly.
40# seems to be pretty popular.
Perhaps a light wire leader, but you'll get a lot less strikes with one.
I like mine about 18-24" and generally connect to my mainline with as small a swivel (black) as possible.
i like 40 florou no swivel and white looney jig thats all....
...the biggest recorded "spanish" mackarel was caught in North Carolina weighed somewhere around 8lbs. (alabama has 6.75), although they fight interestingly good, personally, a 12 lb mono line is more than enough, attached to a 16-18" wire cable of about 15-20lbs size weight, and the end with a size 8 or 6 treble hook with a live 3-inch or smaller LY. Other than that, a "suspending" yozuri , 3-4 in long & 1 oz heavy silver/red or silver/blue colored minnow lure can be a game changer, also., gotchas with chrome silver body with red head or "yellow" proved to be effective too..just my 2 cents...
to me the best spanish lures are gotchas (orange head with gold body is the best) bubble rigs (clarkspoon works wonders behind one), if fishin with a small el-y i use 31 pound wire lighter if possible and a number 4 mustad 3x treble hook. also yo-zuris are real good too.
And the largest caught was 13# caught in North Carolina in 1987.
@chilerelleno, thanks for checking..that's just me from where I read somewhere..simple mistake nothing serious...gulf shores pier may still have not caught anything bigger than 7 lbs. somebody can confirm these better..
