I still haven't figured out how to keep the front and back from curling up without riviting it to the rails of the cart. I'm also thinking about wrapping it around the side rails.
The dually cart is mine. It is a major improvement over a single set of tires in sand, but still is not what I would call perfect for surf fishing. The plastic balloon tires make a long sandy trek more bearable, but it serves its purpose for now. I am sure that many of you are constantly tinkering/improving/completely ruining your setups looking for the perfect combo (like me). I am currently looking at adding dual tires to the front also and who knows what else.....
I might take that dually idea into consideration, looks cool, boy I can see it now! dually carts line up at J&M!
I read a post awhile back on a method of locking rods and gear to a pier cart, but can't seem to find it now. Will someone please post some pics or comments on your locking system?
I have a custom roof rack on my truck with rod locking system. Pm me your number I'll text it to you. Maybe you can post it for me. Too lazy to open an account on photobucket.
Thanks Sammy! Sent you a PM.

I now have it fixed to hold 12 rods, (2 GRANDSONS) and 8 of them are in a straight line, so I've added two 36 inch dowel rods with eye bolts and Locks at each end to attempt to stop some one from casually walking by and taking a rod and reel, or taking them outa the back of the truck if I stop at a store for a few minutes.
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...sstag/lock.jpg
Its possible to lift the wooden rods enuff to get the rods outa the pvc pipes and take all 8 at a time.... BUT.... he would have to have balls to walk off with that arm full, and brains to have thought of doing that way.... BUT I have it tied down with 40# seven strand for now. Any other ideas... a bike cable lock would work also. May add that for going into the store on the way to the pier.

This is the only one I remember with a locking apparatus.

This rack mounts on top of his truck but the locking principle should work on pier carts also.
And that crazy looking guy is not me!! Lol
very nice and safe.....they can't even raise it to get to your reels....that most of the time in the more valuable....nice job!!!!! :headbang:
I do see one weak link,,,,where the holders are bolted could be taken off(bolts) and dropped down far enough to get to your reels ....cordless drill could have that joint apart in no time....might want to get it at least tack welded good
That is some fine looking fabricating and welding. I am a bit concerned about how the tubes and the locking bar are designed in regards to how they interface with the rod's handle and the reel stem. Seems like there is just too much opportunity for the rod wiggle around and nothing to cushion or otherwise protect it from.
I've since added some rubber trim molding you can buy from autozone to install on your car doors around all the contact point with the reel foot. And padding on the back of the rack so when I run over a bump my rods will not slam against the aluminum. I'll post pic when this forum is capable of posting pic from phone
Oh and disclaimer, I did not build this rack. It was my idea and Joseph zielinski of Pensacola made it happen. I was there the whole time he's fabbing the rack so it'll turn out exactly the way I wanted it.
Glad to read that these pictures aren't of the final product and you have taken steps to protect the pretty on those high dollar rigs. Regardless it is a nice vision/design that you apparently were able to get across to the fabricator, who did a nice job for you.
Half of my gears are kinda beat up already as I do wade and use them as knuckle protector when I slip on jetties. And they do get toss around in my truck too, but I always try to avoid making more damage them.
Showtime!!! Here it is!

Classic use of "shaddow hand puppets" in the top photo. Trying to figure out what it looks like!
It looks like an amateur photographer wannabe that wasn't paying attention to what he was doing!
Should've brought my assistant, he does a much better job the me

Been working on my cart off and on for a month. Just wrapped it up.
Looks good to me !! Like the height
Saw this cart on Ocean crest Pier on Oak island NC last year.

I just bought one of these at Sams last week to use on the beach. Tried it on Perdido and it rolled right over the soft stuff even with a full load. Sam's had them for 85 bucks.

I saw this a while back, might be the Escalade of pier carts!

Those Wheeleez tires are too dagblasted expensive to be out on the pier, and the pier will wear'em out quick.
That shorty grocery cart model looked cool. Nice vertical stack that doesn't take up too much real estate and it probably wouldn't be difficult to add some larger wheels to it. There's a lot of "free-range" grocery buggies in SW Atlanta.

Well I'm not sure how the pic is sideways, but here's my contraption. I didn't see the need, since I only get to fish the pier or beach one week a year, to spend a ton of money on a cart. So, I robbed the wide wheels of the old cooler toward the rear of the pic and made the new rolling cooler a dually. I removed the narrow tires and bought a new longer metal rod to mount the wide wheels. Hopefully it won't be very troublesome to get across the sand while going to fish the surf.

Same thing I did for my once a year trips and it worked great last month.
How did you attach the rod holder to.the cooler?
I through bolted mine when doing it (both side of the cooler), didn't think the pastic would hold the screws, used fender washer's on the inside of the cooler and a nylon nut so it never loosened been on mine for 10+ years now, and holds a beach umbrella real good at baseball games through the summer watching the grandson play.
I have a regular cart now, so this doesn't get much use, it might make the trip for the sister&brother in-law to use this year when they come, they have mentioned wanting to fish the pier a few days, so the extra stuff may not fit my cart, unless I add more rod holders that I might.....if my bride fishes she may need it to fish the skinny water when I am not....team up with Lou's wife
.
I also added stainless bolt and nut at the bottom of the plastic for a rod stop, longer handle rods might drag the ground if you don't, the picture above looks real close to the ground when sitting there , he might want to add these bolts for a rod butt stop ....use nylon nut to lock it from backing off ....I also cut a piece of rubber hose for the inside so the bolt wasn't against the rod butt
plastic and insulation may not serve those screws for very long with a little weight or movement
