Uh oh... I can tell already this thread is gonna be crazy. I have plenty of googan story's. but if you wanna know who the biggest googan is its Drew Taylor. Hahaha
I'm at the hunting camp and will post mine later because of no key board.cant type on a phone but I know it's going to be handy for quick reports.
i got a quick one for ya, this one time i was at the GSP, a googan walked out there and started fishing with a zebco 404 and started fishing for king, i tryed at least 10 times to tell him that it wouldn't work, guess he didn't take to well to constructive criticism very well, typical, well when time came around that about a 25lb'er ate that ly, that little reel lasted about 15-20 seconds until the fish busted the shaft as well as just about every other gear in that reel, oh well, tryed to tell him but you know what, typical googans just don't listen! :violent :wall:  they really do get on your nerves :run
anyone who does not know how to fish and will not take any advice as to how to get better at fishing.
Kingkiller, you're right. It's the folks who don't know, don't know they don't know, and refuse to learn that qualify for the term "googan". There's a big difference between a beginner and a googan---every last one of us was a beginner at one point. Googans revel in their ignorance and use it as weapon---"dumb and proud of it." Speaking of which, I hope the young man with whom I was discussing pompano size limits yesterday is reading this, because I was totally and completely wrong---some sort of old fart/brain fart on my part. It isn't what I know that gets me in trouble, it's what I know that ain't so that does the job.
Agreed. A person that doesn't know how to fish can be a googan OR a beginner. Googanism has nothing to do with skill level - he's defined by his attitude.
Lots of googans catch fish, but that doesn't mean you want to be around them or learn from them.

lol
That reminded me of a classic 'zebco googan' back in the days on the old pier.
We tried to tell that fella he was NOT gonna catch a king mackerel on his Zebco 404 and he'd just grunt about the heavy line he had on it blah-blah-blah. :wall:
Well it turned out he hooked a BIG jack that quickly started pullin the guts out of that reel and when it froze up the reelseat broke and the reel took out all the guides on his POS rod one by one (ping, ping, ping ;-)
After it was over the dude was just standing there wide-eyed and slack-jawed with that empty rod in his hands.
Never said another word, he just packed his junk and left. :spank:
That was a priceless moment in 'googandom' :headbang: :mrt:

???
Fin, that "Googanheimer" was HUNNN-GRY!
:D
looked googan up in the dictionary and found this....looks familiar to me....he did get into the 30+ lb king category last year, the short time on the pier....only by luck

Googan Story: you mean like the time I hooked a nice king north of the Octi. As I came down the rail, everyone reeled in & moved out of the way until I got right to the Octi. 3 "gentleman" there just stood there, right at the rail, lines out, and ignored me as, tried to get past them. By time I weaver my way through their lines and round them, the king turned the corner & the line went pop. They never moved.

I was there that day and was going to tell the same story David, classic. My next one is 4 guys were fishing one day when the jacks were biting. Might be the same day David. One of the guys hooked a jack so the others followed him. Next thing you know the 3 rods they left on the rail got hit and the took off like missiles into the water. When they came back they asked John P. Where their rods were. He said "In the water." The look on their face was priceless.
lol

Sometimes the "googans" catch fish. Anybody remember the guy last year who caught huge kings fishing dead bait on the bottom under the pier on the West side?
My favorite "googan" story other than the ones I write, of course, was the lady last year who just bought a brand new penn combo spooled up with momoi, who literally came out on the octi with no clue of how to cast it. Her only experience, apparently, was with a push button reel. When I suggested that she needed to go to the shallows and practice some, she rather rudely told me that she intended to catch big fish from the octi and was told that "anyone" out there would help her do it. I was lucky, she was fishing with shrimp so I told her I was deathly allergic, which is the truth.
As I left, she said, and I quote, "There's no fish in the shallows, anyway."
i love it when people say "theres no fish in the shallows."
mr harley can protest to that one. that man catches so many fish in the shallows!

:wall: they can't cast properly, reel spinning setups upside down, look at you like you're crazy when you have a fish on and say you are coming down the rail...I could go on but this is just some of what I've experienced.
and when they cast repeatedly over your line and just stand there!!!!!!!! :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: oh my god!! i really do hate googans, think their better than us, a bounch of know it alls is exactly what they are :wall:
No doubt there is a reason God gave us 2 ears ond only one mouth. My extremely limited observation of the Googan is that he wants to run his mouth 2x the amount he listens.

I know quite a few regulars who do that quite often and refuse to move their lazy a$$ down the rail.
AMEN
By golly you got that right OPP. That's why I said googanism is defined by attitude not skill level

Watcha for the Gotcha! Beware of side arm Gotcha throwers.
This is Beau after he went to the hospital and they said it would be about a 3 hour wait to get it removed. He came back, fished for a while and went back to get it removed on the way home.

who did that? ???
True story. I saw it myself. Guy set up off the west side.
Here's a googan John G story. Last spring during a hot king bite I casted dead on top of a float like it was a target, reeled it in fast causing a fine mess. Well the person I casted on was using braid and I was pissed off and grumbling about the mess and expressing my dislike for braid as I was trying to get it untangled. I finally cut my line, cut the braid fussing the whole time and when I finally looked up,it was Pescador that I had thrown on. Talking about wanting to crawl into a hole,I insulted one of the most respected fishers on the pier. Bottom line is,we all have our googan moments, some of us just hide them better.
I still like the guy last summer bottom fishing inside the yellow lines with a 10/0 Electric reel, battery and all, along with two other lines out.
Gentlemen, thank you. It is 19 degrees up here and snowing. You certainly brightened my day.

actually were trying to catch ling, spanish, kings, reds, specks, flounder, sheepshead ,mangrove snapper,bluefish,tarpon,pompano,mullet,...... the list goes on and on we have a more variety because on the pier we cover more water unless you yak your baits out which is to much work for me personally. and we dont get sandy or wet which do you think is worth it?

I travel 850 miles just to do this....what a bargain at 8.00 to stand elbow to elbow with fellow fisher's and try and catch those fish all day....heck it is cheap compared to the several thousand I spend to be there....that would be cheaper if I came alone....got to make the bride & grandkids happy :poke1:
I guess pier fishing isn't for everyone....but I sure love it, and that is just part of it...whether i am catching, gaffing or netting....sometimes just watching all the young ones having fun ....what a bargain
1 speck of sand in your reel will be very bad....just saying....I don't care for sand and fishing
